JB-Hi Fi Queen Street Closed Today!

I finally decided that I would go spend $69.99 at JB Hi-fi and buy a copy of Norton Save & Restore when I find that they closed the whole shop for "stocktaking".

Well, maybe this was a sign telling me that I should evaluate the trial version that I have first before committing to it, or maybe I was just unlucky!

I see that Symantec are not offering any multi-user license packs with Save & Restore like they do with their Norton Antivirus and Norton 360 products. I imagine that this could be because they prefer to earn the ongoing revenue that they can get from Antivirus subscriptions and can wear the cost of subsidizing these packages. Your favourite Dick Smith Electronics is also devoid of any copies of Save & Restore.

Good pricing on Eset Smart Security

The OEM subscription to Norton Internet Security 2008 included with my Media Center (HTPC) computer is due to expire very soon so I began looking around on how much it would cost to extend the subscription. Extending my NIS 2008 subscription was going to cost around $NZ80.

I also noticed that there is a retail version (and OEM version too) of Norton Internet Security available for $NZ99 and it includes licenses for up to 3 computers and a 'Bonus' Knocked Up DVD movie. This was quite good value.

I currently use Eset Smart Security on one of my other computers, so I decided to query the New Zealand suppliers (Chillisoft) on what they had to offer. They responded very quickly and I was surprised at what they had on offer! I could buy another license for only $NZ15+GST!

Below is the original email and response:

SUBJECT: Product Enquiry

Hello,

Im a happy user of Eset Smart Security on one of my machines, and im
looking to put it on the rest of my machines.

As I currently have a license for Eset Smart Security, are you able to
provide a discount for a 2nd license for it?

Its just that its looking like quite good value to get Norton Internet
Security 2008 with 3 licences (And a Knocked-up DVD Movie!) for only
$99.99. Im wondering if similar licensing is available for Eset.

Cheers.

---------- The Response ----------

Hi Hayden
Thanks for your email.
For an additional smart security licence; it'll cost you $15.00+GST. It is also a good value for money indeed.
Please let me know if you are interested to add on and i'll do it for you.

Please give me a call on 309 3281 and I'll sort this out for you online.

The slowest download servers I have ever seen

Occasionally I need to connect to the Brother (Brother International Ltd) website to download drivers and updates for my Brother multifunction device.

I have had the pleasure from downloading from this site a number of times. Today's rant is regarding the fact the the download speed is horrible. From the screenshot you will see a magnificent 0.8 KB/sec speed on a driver download (4102peng.EXE) . This rate is pretty much constant throughout the entire download process. Shame on you Brother International!

You may notice that I am also downloading a file from Microsoft (FileFormatConverters.exe) to show a comparison and you can see it has a more reasonable speed of 846 KB/sec. 846 KB/sec may not be a staggering speed outside of New Zealand but it is representative of the monopoly situation Telecom New Zealand has when it comes to controlling bandwidth. Hopefully the building of a new international cable by Kordia will reduce New Zealand's reliance on the Southern Cross Cable.

I am re-downloading the drivers for my Brother MFC-210CN printer because attempting to update my Windows XP Machine to Service Pack 3 completely toasted it!

Piracy on Queen Street?

Is this Queen street Internet Cafe offering a service to copy games for you? I have walked past this place dozens of times and the sign is always there.

Are they offering to pirate games for you? or are they simply offering an on-site photocopy service for all your needs? I don't think so.

Looks like it will be time for a visit to see whats going on here.
